João Monjardino Prize 2021


Highlight

27.12.2021 - The Jury of the João Monjardino 2021 Prize met on 15 December to analyse the applications submitted to the competition and selected the application of the researcher Diana Nadine Santos Moreira, first author of the paper “The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the precipitation of intimate partner violence”, published in the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry. Since they did to not fit in the topic the prize is aimed at, these applications were excluded.

Doctor-Patient relationship: personalized medicine and/or narrative medicine?

Starting in 2021 and under the new protocol between Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) and Fundação Professor Francisco Pulido Valente, the João Monjardino Prize replaces the former Pulido Valente Prize which had its last edition in 2020.

  • Application deadline: 15 July to 12 October 2021, 17:00H (Lisbon time)

The Prize is intended to distinguish the best paper published on the topic “Doctor-Patient relationship: personalized medicine and/or narrative medicine?” (see footnote) without restrictions concerning the year of publication, which describes the results of research carried out in an institution of the national science and technology system by a researcher under 35 years old at time of submission of the application.

Only one original work per applicant will be admitted to the competition, published or accepted for publication with proof of acceptance in a national or international specialist journal and in which the applicant must be first author or co-author (as long as it is acknowledged in the publication as having an equal contribution to the paper as the first author).

Funding

The amount of the Prize is 10.000 EUR (ten thousand euros), paid in equal shares by both foundations and awarded in a single instalment.

How and when to apply

Applications must be submitted between 15 July 2021 and 12 October 2021 (5pm, Lisbon time), by filling in the online application form available here.

The following documents must be uploaded in the application form:

  • Applicant’s citizenship card (Cartão de Cidadão - CC);
  • Letter from the head of the research group, in English, confirming that the research was carried out in their laboratory and that he was informed and approves the application. The letter must also contain information about the applicant’s contribution to the work published or accepted for publication;
  • Proof of acceptance for publication of the paper if it has not yet been published.

Applications are evaluated according the following criteria:

  • Scientific quality of the paper
  • Relevance of the study and the results obtained within the topic of the prize
  • Contribution of the applicant to the work published or accepted for publication

The final decision will be notified to the applicants by e-mail.

Final Remark

Personalized medicine is a model of medical practice that considers the phenotypic and genotypic characterization of the individual, that is, includes socio-demographic, environmental and lifestyle data, as well as clinical, imaging and genetic information, to estimate the individual predisposition to a disease and defining preventative and therapeutic strategies for each individual (European Commission).

Narrative medicine is a model of practice and intellectual approach that allows clinicians to look beyond the biological mechanisms at the centre of conventional approaches to medical practice and to include domains of thought and ways of saying that focus on language and representation, emotion and relationships that enlighten healthcare practice (Brian Hurwitz).
