ERA-NET: Water Works 2014-2019 in Support of the Water JPI

The Foundation for Science and Technology is a Funding Partner Organisation of the ERA-NET Water Works 2014-2019. This ERA-NET was launched in 2014 with the goal of coordinating and promoting research and innovation in Europe in the Water domain. The WaterWorks 2014 Cofunded Call is at the core of this ERA-NET and has the contribution of 17 partners from 15 European countries (see below) and the European Commission. This Call is open since 2 March 2015.

OBJECTIVES: Development of collaborative research and innovation projects related to the present societal challenges Europe is facing on the Water domain. Promote the multi-disciplinary work, and the efficient combination of basic and applied research. Stimulate the mobility of researchers and foment the building of collaborative networks.
The Call is conducted in two steps: pre-proposal and full proposal submission stages.

CALL TITLE: Research and Innovation for Developing Technological Solutions and Services for Water Systems

    • Research and Innovation for Developing Technological Solutions and Services:
    • 1. for Water Treatment, Reuse, Recycling and Desalination;
    • 2. for Water Resources Management;
    • 3. to Mitigate Impacts of Extreme Events (Floods and Droughts) at Catchment Scale.
    • IMPORTANT:Proposals have to cover at least one of the subtopics described below:

    • 1. Research and Innovation for Developing Technological Solutions and Services for Water Treatment, Reuse, Recycling and Desalination:
    • • Developing low-energy, low cost, low chemical and high-efficiency technologies and processes for water treatment and desalination;
    • • Developing water recycling technologies and concepts leading to the production of safe resources for reuse;
    • • Developing innovative chemical/physical/biological tools to assess risks and to enhance the resilience of urban water systems; and
    • • Promoting innovative separation and extraction technologies in industrial areas to harvest resources from wastewater.
    • 2. Research and Innovation for Developing Technological Solutions and Services for Water Resources Management:
    • • Developing smart water technologies based on sensor networks and real-time information systems;
    • • Promoting the interoperability of databases, sensors, and combined socio-economic and physical water models;
    • • Developing methodologies for adaptive water management, using relevant study cases, scenario development, and uncertainty assessment; and
    • • Setting up innovative decision-making tools.
    • 3. Research and Innovation for Developing Technological Solutions and Services to Mitigate Impacts of Extreme Events (Floods and Droughts) at Catchment Scale.
    • • Innovative tools for protection from hydroclimatic extreme events, including nature-based solutions, sensor technology, systems for interpreting and communicating data, and monitoring networks;
    • • Mitigating the harmful impacts of extreme events, implementing the concept of ecosystem services where possible; and
    • • Developing technological, and/or managerial and/or integrated risk management solutions to urban floods and droughts.

    • The funding available for Portuguese teams is 500.000€. If the Consortium is coordinated by a Portuguese team, its maximum budget is of 250.000€. If a Portuguese team is only a partner of the Consortium, its maximum budget is of 150.000€. If there are more than one Portuguese team involved in the same Consortium, the budget has to be shared.

      Portuguese institutions must follow the Regulations governing access to funding for Scientific Research and Technological Development projects . The dedication (FTE) in transnational projects is not taken into account for the 100% (FTE) dedication to national projects.

    • • Each consortium must be comprised by a minimum of 3 partners that must be eligible to be funded by 3 different participating countries;
    • • The maximum requested global budget per proposal must be 1.5 M€;
    • • Duration of projects must range between 24 and 36 months.
    • Belgium (French-speaking community), Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Moldavia, Norway, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands. Researchers from i) Water JPI partner countries not funding this call, ii) Water JPI observer countries, or iii) third countries, can participate in the consortia at their own expense.   • Statement of Commitment (Portugal only): Portuguese teams have to send to the Call Secretariat a Statement of Commitment duly signed, dated and stamped by the Head of the Portuguese applicant organization and by the Principal Investigator, until 10 days after the deadline for submission of pre-proposals. FCT may latter require the original of the statement of commitment.
