The major questions or problems addressed by the Research Group Philosophy of Human Sciences, Ethics and Politics can be stated as follows: what is it to be human (today)? Who is human (today)? How to be human (today)? With whom are we human (today)? Are we still human? Do we still have to be human? These questions, and more, are tackled in three different but related research areas. Science, Ethics and Politics: focus the homo ethicus/politicus; it considers the political, ethical and social questions and impacts of science, and the way it may change or constitute social and individual life. Philosophy of Technology: deals with the homo tecnologicus; it takes into account the major challenges and issues of technological developments and applications in what regards the human frontiers, i.e. the frontiers of what is understood and accepted as human. Science and Society: addresses some aspects of the homo socius, mainly the problems, tasks and challenges connected with citizenship.
Overall, the Research Group Philosophy of Human Sciences, Ethics and Politics faces a set of problems that, in the last two centuries, define and redefine the possibility of the Human Sciences and their intelligibility. The problem of the connection between the historical and the structural dimensions of human understanding, the problem of the relevance of mathematical models in contrast in the contextual discourse of the Human Sciences, the problem of the roles of causality or intention in the explanation of social events, are problems that define the outline of our research. But at the same time faces the ethical and political foundations of the Human Sciences, the technological and social dimensions of the human.
